These engines actively crawl the web and prefer recent, relevant pages. For engines that rely primarily on training data (ChatGPT, Claude), the recency effect is mediated differently — brands with consistently active web presences tend to appear more frequently in training data, and more recent training data naturally favors brands that were publishing actively during the training data collection window.
We observed stratification into three tiers based on content age:
- Active (0–90 days): Brands with content published or substantially updated within the last 90 days. These brands received the highest mention rates across all engines, with approximately 3× the mention volume of stale brands.
- Fading (91–180 days): Brands in the 3–6 month content freshness window showed moderate mention rates. Their AI visibility was declining but had not yet disappeared. This window represents an urgent action zone — brands here can recover with a content refresh.

A brand that appears in an AI Overview is effectively getting a "citation from Google" in the most visible position on the most-used search engine. Optimizing for AI Overviews requires a combination of traditional SEO (ranking in the top results that inform the overview) and GEO (providing clearly structured, citable facts that the overview can extract).
Gemini's recommendation style tends to be structured and list-oriented. Responses frequently use numbered or bulleted lists, comparison tables, and categorized recommendations. Brands that organize their own content in similar structured formats — feature comparison tables, clearly segmented product tiers, FAQ sections with direct answers — are more likely to see their information reflected accurately in Gemini's structured responses.
4.4 Perplexity
Perplexity is the most transparent AI engine in terms of source attribution, and this transparency makes it uniquely valuable for brands that invest in GEO. Every Perplexity response includes numbered source citations — typically 5–15 sources per response — with each citation linking to the originating web page. Users can see exactly which sources informed the AI's answer, click through to verify, and evaluate the authority of each source. This academic-style citation approach means that a brand cited by Perplexity receives not just a mention but a verifiable, clickable reference that users can follow.
Perplexity's real-time web crawling means that freshly published content is discoverable almost immediately. We observed that new content pages indexed by Perplexity within days of publication — significantly faster than the weeks or months it may take for training data-based engines to incorporate new information. This makes Perplexity the most responsive engine for content marketing efforts: a blog post published today can appear as a Perplexity source within the same week.
Perplexity's citation behavior favors content that presents information as clear, verifiable facts rather than opinions or marketing copy. Pages with structured data, authoritative sourcing, specific numbers and statistics, and expert-attributed content are cited more frequently. Product pages with clear feature lists and pricing perform particularly well because Perplexity can extract and present these facts in its structured responses. Conversely, pages filled with marketing superlatives ("industry-leading," "best-in-class," "revolutionary") without substantive factual content tend to be deprioritized as sources.
For brands in the research and technology sectors, Perplexity is arguably the most important AI engine to optimize for. Its user base skews toward researchers, analysts, and information-intensive decision-makers who value source transparency and detailed citations. Brands that are already optimizing for both ChatGPT and Perplexity are likely well-positioned for SearchGPT visibility as it matures.
4.7 You.com
You.com offers a multi-step AI search experience that distinguishes between quick chat responses, detailed research-mode queries, and code-focused interactions. Its user base skews toward developers, technical professionals, and early adopters who appreciate the control that multiple interaction modes provide. For technical products, developer tools, and B2B SaaS, You.com represents a niche but high-value visibility surface.
You.com's research mode produces particularly detailed, well-cited responses that rival Perplexity in source transparency. In research mode, You.com retrieves and synthesizes information from multiple sources, presenting inline citations and supporting evidence for its recommendations. Brands with comprehensive technical documentation, API references, and developer-focused content perform particularly well in this mode.
You.com's chat mode is more conversational and resembles ChatGPT's interaction style. Brands benefit from maintaining accessible content that works across both interaction modes. The key differentiator for You.com visibility is technical credibility — the platform's developer-focused audience values substance over marketing, and brands that lead with technical depth rather than promotional messaging tend to receive stronger recommendations.
5. Industry Benchmarks
5.1 Understanding the Brand Strength Score Scale
The Brand Strength Score provides a standardized framework for understanding where a brand sits on the AI visibility spectrum. Based on our observations across verticals and engines, we have established benchmark ranges that define what "good" AI visibility looks like. These benchmarks are observational — they reflect the distribution of scores we have encountered, not arbitrary thresholds.
- Invisible (0–20): The brand does not appear in AI engine responses for relevant queries. The brand is recognized as a category leader or strong alternative. Strong brands invest in comprehensive GEO strategies — structured data, content freshness, third-party reviews, expert-attributed content, and multi-platform presence.
- Dominant (81–100): The brand is the default recommendation across virtually all engines and relevant queries. It appears first, with detailed citations, in response to both general category queries and specific use case questions. Dominant brands are typically well-funded category leaders with extensive web presences, strong third-party review profiles, and broad media coverage. Achieving dominant status requires sustained, multi-year investment in both product excellence and content marketing.
5.2 Benchmarks by Industry Vertical
Not all verticals are equally competitive for AI visibility. SaaS is the most competitive vertical, with dense fields of well-optimized brands and high AI recommendation volumes. Healthcare and finance are less competitive in terms of direct recommendations (because AI engines are cautious) but more challenging in terms of earning qualified citations.

In SaaS, a score of 45 means the brand is reaching the "Visible" threshold in a highly competitive landscape — a strong achievement though with room for improvement. In healthcare, a score of 45 means the brand is significantly above the median and approaching "Strong" status, reflecting the difficulty of earning AI recommendations in a cautious, regulation-heavy vertical.
5.3 Actionable Target Ranges
Based on our observations, we recommend that brands set AI visibility targets appropriate to their vertical, competitive position, and resources. A reasonable first milestone for most brands is reaching the "Visible" range (41–60) on at least three of the seven engines. This typically requires 3–6 months of focused GEO effort: implementing structured data, establishing a content freshness cadence, ensuring AI crawler access, and building third-party citations.
For venture-funded or well-resourced brands competing for category leadership, the target should be the "Strong" range (61–80) across at least five engines. This requires sustained investment in content marketing, PR, review site presence, and technical optimization. Reaching the "Strong" range typically takes 6–12 months of consistent effort and requires a cross-functional approach involving marketing, content, product, and engineering teams.
The "Dominant" range (81–100) is achievable primarily by category leaders with extensive resources, strong brand recognition, and significant media coverage. For most brands, targeting dominance on 1–2 engines (particularly those most relevant to their audience) while maintaining "Strong" status on others is a more practical and achievable strategy.
